Psycholegal (forensic) assessments refer to assessments completed to answer specific referral questions important for civil and criminal legal proceedings. All psycholegal assessments are independent, objective assessments of the evaluee for the referral questions.
These include independent psychological examinations (what are sometimes termed independent medical examinations or IME), such as assessments related to workplace matters (workplace injuries), accidents, or personal injury claims. These evaluations may address diagnosis, causation, functional limitations, prognosis, and treatments needs within a legal context. Services also include review and appraisal of reports prepared by other psychologists.
Psycholegal services also include violence risk assessment. Violence risk assessments may address violence risk or more specialized forms of violence, including sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, workplace violence, elder abuse, gang-related violence or extremist violence.
