
Dr. Alana N. Cook, R.Psych. provides psycholegal assessment services and treatment in BC. She is a Registered Psychologist of the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC. She holds an academic position as an Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Psychology at Simon Fraser University. Dr. Cook is a consulting forensic psychologist for the WorkSafe BC Provider Network and for the Correctional Service of Canada. She has worked in the past as a Psychologist for the BC Forensic Psychiatric Service Commission (BC Forensic Psychiatric Hospital) and as a Senior Psychology Advisor for WorkSafe BC.
Dr. Cook completed her PhD in clinical-forensic psychology at Simon Fraser University and her Master’s of Science in clinical psychology at Pacific University. Her pre-doctoral internship/residency was completed at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton with clinical rotations in the Forensic, Schizophrenia, and Health Psychology services. She also completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship with joint appointments at the Mental Health, Law, and Policy Institute in the Department of Psychology at Simon Fraser University, the British Columbia Forensic Psychiatric Service Commission, and Protect International.
Dr. Cook focuses her work at the intersection of psychology and law, specifically on psychological and forensic assessment, treatment, and policy. In her clinical work, she has conducted evidence-based assessment and treatment across the spectrum of mental disorder, including Serious Mental Illness and Personality Disorder, in both inpatient and outpatient settings within forensic and non-forensic contexts. Her professional work has included consultations with various mental health and law enforcement professionals, delivery of training workshops in violence risk assessment and management, and teaching, mentoring, and supervision of students.
Dr. Cook has received grants for her research, including contributions from Public Safety Canada, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the Canadian Bar Association. She has co-authored several publications related to violence risk assessment and management, psychopathic personality disorder, group-based violence, criminal justice policy, and professional development. She has also co-authored over 80 conference presentations on topics related to mental health and psychology and the law. Dr. Cook is the first author on guidelines for the assessment and management of group-based violence, the Multi-level Guidelines, or MLG. Dr. Cook also co-edited the Handbook of Forensic Mental Health Services with Dr. Ron Roesch.
Dr. Cook has been active in professional service and has contributed to various educational institutions and professional organizations (AP-LS, IAFMHS, and BCPA). She has served as a manuscript reviewer for the International Journal of Forensic Mental Health Services, and as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous scientific journals, including Law and Human Behavior and Criminal Justice and Behavior. She has been recognized for her work by numerous organizations; she received the Christopher Webster Young Scholar Award from the International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services.
Dr. Cook is a member of the British Columbia Psychological Association (BCPA), Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), Canadian Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (CATAP), and the International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services (IAFMHS).
